Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was sworn in as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, November 28, marking her parliamentary debut. Gandhi won the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala by an impressive margin of 4,10,931 votes, defeating Sathyan Mokeri of the CPI (Communist Party of India). Her victory reflects the Congress’s continued strength in this constituency, considered a party stronghold.
This historic moment also brings together all three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family—Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi—in Parliament for the first time in decades.
Priyanka’s electoral debut follows the vacating of the Wayanad seat by her brother, Rahul Gandhi, who shifted to represent Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, after his election in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Notably, Priyanka’s victory margin surpassed even Rahul’s tally when he won from the same constituency in previous elections.
Holding a copy of the Constitution, Priyanka took her oath in Hindi, with her mother Sonia Gandhi, brother Rahul Gandhi, and husband Robert Vadra present to witness the momentous occasion. Expressing her gratitude on social media after receiving her election certificate, Priyanka wrote, “For me, it is not just a document; it is a symbol of your love, trust, and the values we are committed to.”
Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan, another Congress leader, was also sworn in as the MP for Nanded, Maharashtra. He secured the seat with a significant margin of 5,86,788 votes, filling the vacancy created by the demise of his father, former Congress MP Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan.
Priyanka’s win and debut mark a new chapter in her political journey, underscoring the continued influence of the Nehru-Gandhi family in Indian politics.
