Temi, South Sikkim | August 4, 2025 — Hemu Rai, a 4th Dan black belt and officer with the Sikkim Police, has captured the nation’s heart with her incredible achievements on the international stage. The 28-year-old martial artist returned to India on August 2 after winning medals at a prestigious international karate tournament held in Hungary — adding another proud chapter to her decorated career.

Hailing from the serene village of Temi in South Sikkim, Hemu has dominated the karate circuit in 2025, clinching six gold medals at top-level competitions, including the National Games in Goa, the Kohinoor Cup in Nepal, and several national championships across India.

Beyond her victories in the ring, Hemu is a tireless mentor to young girls, especially those from underprivileged and remote areas. Through self-defense training programs, she empowers them to be strong, confident, and independent.

“She fights not just in the ring but also for the dreams of other girls,” said her coach D.B. Subba, highlighting her role as both an athlete and a changemaker.

Hemu’s journey began in the hills of Temi, where she attended local schools before joining the Sikkim Police. Her rise to the national stage is a story of dedication, discipline, and passion for martial arts.

Today, Hemu Rai stands tall as not just a karate champion, but an inspiring role model for youth across Sikkim and India — proving that with grit and purpose, even the smallest village can produce the brightest stars.
