Sikkim | August 12, 2025 — Authorities have announced the temporary suspension of heavy goods vehicle (HGV) movement along a vulnerable 7-kilometre stretch of National Highway 10, between Km 20.0 (27th Mile) and Km 27.0 (Teesta Bazaar). The restriction, issued by the Highway Administrator under the Control of National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002, came into effect from 1:00 PM on August 12 and will remain in force until 6:00 PM on August 15, 2025.
The decision follows growing concerns over road safety and infrastructure integrity on this critical route, which connects Sevoke in West Bengal to Rangpo in Sikkim—a vital corridor for passenger and goods transportation.
Deteriorating Road Conditions Prompt Immediate Action
Officials cited severe deterioration of the road surface as the primary reason for the suspension. Continuous monsoon rains, frequent landslides, and the heavy movement of large trucks have significantly compromised the structural integrity of the highway in this area. As a precautionary measure, authorities have restricted access to heavy commercial vehicles, which are particularly damaging on weakened road surfaces and pose a higher risk of triggering or being affected by landslides.
The suspension aims to:
Ensure the safety of all motorists traveling along this stretch.
Reduce the risk of vehicular accidents and landslide-related incidents.
Prevent further erosion and surface damage to this already fragile segment of NH-10.
Traffic Management and Enforcement
The District Administration has been entrusted with overseeing the implementation of this directive. Alternative traffic management strategies have been put in place to maintain the uninterrupted flow of light motor vehicles (LMVs) and other permitted traffic. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and are expected to reassess conditions post-August 15 for a possible extension or withdrawal of the restriction.
Appeal to Transport Operators
The Highway Administrator and local officials have appealed to truck drivers, freight operators, and transport unions to cooperate fully with the order. Transporters have been advised to avoid this route for heavy haulage until the restriction is lifted.
Motorists are also urged to remain cautious, adhere to posted advisories, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.
