The trial of Sanjay Roy, accused in the August 9 rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College<\/a>, began Monday in a Kolkata court<\/a>. Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das presided over the proceedings, held behind closed doors. The victim\u2019s father and a neighbor testified in-camera as key witnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roy, a Kolkata Police<\/a> civic volunteer, has been charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita<\/a>, including Section 64 (rape<\/a>), Section 66 (death-causing injury), and Section 103 (murder). The CBI<\/a>, which took over the investigation following a Calcutta High Court order, submitted evidence allegedly linking Roy to the crime scene through forensic findings, such as blood traces on Roy\u2019s clothing and DNA evidence<\/a>. A 45-page CBI chargesheet lists 11 pieces of forensic and documentary evidence<\/a>, with a Bluetooth device <\/a>connected to Roy\u2019s phone also discovered at the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the trial, Roy has maintained his innocence, asserting that he was framed by high-ranking officials, including Kolkata Police\u2019s former commissioner. \u201cSenior officers are involved in this,\u201d he told reporters outside the court, claiming they threatened and conspired against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This case has drawn attention due to nationwide outrage and allegations of custodial terture following protests. In a related Supreme Court <\/a>ruling on Monday, the Calcutta High Court\u2019s directive for a CBI<\/a> probe into alleged police torture of protesters <\/a>was stayed. The Supreme Court<\/a> called for an investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT<\/a>) comprising seven officers, five of whom must be women<\/a>, following accusations that a protester was physically abused<\/a> in custody<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
