The inauguration marked <a href=\"https:\/\/socialwelfare.vikaspedia.in\/viewcontent\/social-welfare\/scheduled-tribes-welfare\/janjatiya-gaurav-divas?lgn=en\">Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas<\/a>, also coinciding with the 150th birth anniversary of tribal leader Birsa Munda. The new centre aims to uplift and preserve the rich cultural heritage and knowledge of Sikkim\u2019s tribal communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the event in Gangtok, Chief Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prem_Singh_Tamang\">Prem Singh Tamang<\/a> honored Birsa Munda, praising his fight against colonial oppression and his contributions to tribal welfare. \u201cBirsa Munda, revered as \u2018Dharti Aaba,\u2019 has an indelible place in Indian history. His fight for justice and upliftment of his people remains an inspiration,\u201d said Tamang. He also extended greetings to Guru Nanak Jayanti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tamang lauded the Social Welfare Department, engineers, and local contractors for completing the institute amid delays caused by the <a href=\"https:\/\/thecord.in\/?p=3071\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>. He expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for inaugurating the institute, calling it a significant milestone for<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sikkimese_people\"> Sikkim\u2019s tribal communities<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chief Minister highlighted several Central government initiatives, including four <a href=\"https:\/\/tribal.nic.in\/EMRS.aspx\">Eklavya Residential Model Schools <\/a>(ERMS) that have allowed students from Bhutia, Lepcha, and Tamang communities to access quality education. The government\u2019s commitment to education remains a central theme, with Tamang describing it as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bambinos.live\/blog\/teachers-the-backbone-of-our-society#:~:text=Teachers%20%2D%20The%20Backbone%20of%20Our%20Society\">the backbone of society<\/a>.\u201d Plans are in place to merge sparsely populated primary schools and provide affected students with transportation and hostel facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social Welfare Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/sikkim.gov.in\/media\/news-announcement\/news-info?name=Minister+Mr+Samdup+Lepcha+and+Advisor+Ms+Pamin+Lepcha+assume+office+at++Women+and+Child+Development+Department\">Samdup Lepcha<\/a> commended the TRI, emphasising its role in safeguarding tribal languages, knowledge, and customs.
