The first-ever SARAS<\/a> Mela in Darjeeling town<\/a>, and the seventh edition in the district, achieved sales exceeding \u20b97 crore during its 12-day run from November 13 to 24. Inaugurated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee<\/a>, the event showcased products from more than 300 artisans, primarily women from Self-Help Groups <\/a>(SHGs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sumedha Pradhan, Executive Director of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration <\/a>(GTA<\/a>) and Project Director of the District Rural Development Cell (DRDC)<\/a>, attributed the event\u2019s success to its widespread publicity. \u201cMany artisans sold out their stock, reordered, and sold everything again,\u201d Pradhan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mela featured 100 general stalls, 15 food stalls, and open spaces, with participation from all districts of West Bengal<\/a> and states like Haryana, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat. Evening cultural programs by Hill artists and SHG women added to the vibrant atmosphere, providing tourists with a glimpse of the region\u2019s cultural diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her inaugural speech, Chief Minister Banerjee highlighted Bengal\u2019s success with SHGs under the Ananda Dhara<\/a> scheme. \u201cWith 12 lakh SHGs in Bengal and \u20b91.1 lakh crore worth of bank loans disbursed, this is a model for women\u2019s empowerment across India,\u201d she said. She also emphasized the economic impact of the mela, stating, \u201cThe event showcases the handicrafts of Darjeeling and Bengal to a global audience, greatly benefiting SHGs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Banerjee noted that over 11,000 SHGs have been created in the GTA<\/a> area, with loans worth \u20b9500 crore already provided. \u201cTourists from across the country and the world visit Darjeeling, making events like this vital for promoting local artisans and boosting the rural economy,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event\u2019s success has prompted hopes for a repeat next year, with Pradhan expressing optimism about hosting the prestigious event again.<\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
