Sikkim\u2019s para-athletes made a remarkable impact at the 1st Northeast Para-Sports<\/a> Meet 2024, returning home with four medals from the prestigious event held in Guwahati, Assam<\/a>, from November 27 to 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eight-member team competed against over 500 athletes <\/a>from eight northeastern states in categories including swimming, athletics, badminton, and table tennis. The event highlighted the resilience and talent of para-athletes in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phuntsok Tashi Bhutia led Sikkim\u2019s medal tally by clinching a gold in table tennis<\/a>, making history as the state\u2019s first gold medalist in the competition. In swimming, Nima Dorjee Tamang<\/a> secured a bronze in the 100-meter freestyle event, demonstrating exceptional athleticism. Further success came in the shot put category, with Sher Bahadur Thapa<\/a> and Dik Bahadur Basnet earning bronze medals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expressing his pride, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang<\/a> said, \u201cHeartiest congratulations to all the participants and medalists for their outstanding accomplishments! The closing ceremony, held at the Sarusajai Stadium<\/a> on November 29, was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, adding to the grandeur of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team\u2019s journey was made possible by the support of Sikkim\u2019s<\/a> Sports & Youth Affairs Department, with the athletes flagged off by Minister Raju Basnet on November 26.
