The Sikkim State High\u2011Level Committee (SSHLC) has submitted its final report to Chief Minister Prem\u202fSingh\u202fTamang, recommending Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for 12 left\u2011out communities in Sikkim. The report was handed over during a concluding meeting in New\u202fDelhi, marking a significant milestone in the state\u2019s efforts toward constitutional recognition of these communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prepared over nine months, the four-volume report compiled ethnographic research, field studies, and stakeholder consultations to meet the five criteria set by the Government of India for ST inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The recommended communities are: Bhujel, Gurung, Jogi, Rai (Kirat Khambu), Kirat Dewan (Yakha), Khas (Chettri\u2011Bahun), Mangar, Newar, Sanyasi, Sunuwar (Mukhia), Thami, and Majhi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CM Tamang called the moment \u201chistoric\u201d and expressed optimism about securing recognition for these communities, emphasizing the government will continue advancing the case with the Central Government with support from community representatives and elected officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also underscored that the right process had been rigorously followed to prepare a well-researched, authentic report this time, rectifying past technical flaws<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prof. B.V. Sharma, SSHLC Chairman, and Prof. Mahendra P. Lama, Vice Chairman, led the report\u2019s preparation with dedicated teamwork across scholars, officials, and community members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
