Renowned boxer Mary Kom has tendered her resignation as India’s Chef de Mission for the upcoming 2024 Olympics in Paris, citing personal reasons. Kom’s decision, announced through a letter addressed to IOA President PT Usha, the Union Sports Ministry, and the Sports Authority of India, has brought a significant development just months before the prestigious event.
In her letter, Kom expressed her regret over retracting from her commitment, stating, “It is embarrassing for me to retreat from a pronounced commitment, which I seldom do, but I am left with no choice.” The news of her resignation comes after weeks of speculation following her appointment to the position by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in March.
The IOA had expressed confidence in Kom’s leadership, highlighting her unparalleled dedication to sports and her inspiring journey. Winter Olympian Shiva Keshavan was also named as her deputy, aiming to bring a wealth of experience to support the team’s management.
However, Kom’s decision has left the IOA in a precarious situation, requiring them to seek a replacement for the crucial role of Chef de Mission just over 100 days before the Opening Ceremony. While the IOA respects Kom’s decision and her privacy, they now face the challenge of reinitiating the selection process amidst time constraints.
Kom, who represented India at the Tokyo Olympics, is ineligible for Olympic-style boxing due to age restrictions. Despite stepping down from her administrative role, she has pledged her support to the Indian contingent and expressed her intention to cheer for the athletes during the Games.
The role of Chef de Mission holds significant importance in ensuring the welfare of athletes and coordinating with the organising committee. The IOA will now embark on finding a suitable replacement to lead the Indian contingent at the Paris Olympics, as the countdown to the event continues.
