The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across several districts of North Bengal over the next seven days. According to the latest forecast, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely in most parts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda during this period.
Officials have warned that isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, ranging between 7 and 20 centimeters, may occur in some areas. This is expected to be accompanied by gusty winds with speeds reaching up to 40 kilometers per hour, along with lightning activity at a few locations.
The IMD has cautioned residents of hilly districts like Darjeeling and Kalimpong about the potential risk of landslides, while water-logging remains a concern in low-lying regions such as Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during thunderstorms, and remain updated with the latest weather information. The public has also been advised not to take shelter under trees or near electric poles during lightning.
Temperature forecasts indicate a slight dip of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the coming days. Maximum temperatures are expected to decrease slightly before stabilizing, while minimum temperatures are likely to remain largely unchanged throughout the week.
The IMD has also issued special advisory for farmers, urging them to take precautionary measures to protect standing crops, as heavy rain and strong winds could potentially cause damage in some areas.
Meteorologists predict that the current wet spell will gradually subside by early next week, bringing dry and calmer weather conditions across most parts of North Bengal. Residents are advised to remain cautious and follow official updates to ensure safety during the period of unsettled weather.
