13 Lives Lost, 2 Injured in Sudden Storm: Malda, Murshidabad, and Jalpaiguri Affected

Tragedy struck West Bengal’s Malda district as lightning claimed the lives of at least 13 individuals and injured two others. The incidents occurred during a sudden storm, with casualties reported across Malda, Murshidabad, and Jalpaiguri.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended her condolences, expressing solidarity with the affected families. She assured swift assistance, acknowledging the efforts of the district administration.

The victims included Chandan Sahani, Raj Mridha, Manojit Mondal, Asit Saha, Sumitra Mondal, Pankaj Mondal, Nayan Roy, Priyanka Singh Roy, Rana Sheikh, Atul Mandal, and Sabrul Sheikh. Additionally, Fatema Bibi and Dulu Mondal sustained injuries.

Among the deceased were Raj Mridha and Asit Saha, students returning home from a mango orchard, and Nayan Roy and Priyanka Singh Roy, who were cultivating jute when the lightning struck.

The district administration promptly announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased. Meanwhile, preparations for the Monsoon intensified as the IMD forecasted a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.

Despite the tragic losses, Chief Minister Banerjee reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the affected families and ensuring necessary assistance. The community mourns the lives lost and stands together in solidarity during this challenging time.
