Nepal Imposes Nationwide Curfew As The Gen Z Protests Turn Violent

Date:

Kathmandu, September 10, 2025 – The Nepalese government has announced a nationwide curfew starting Wednesday evening following a wave of violent protests that erupted across the country. The unrest, largely driven by Gen Z youth, comes in response to government policies, including a recent ban on social media platforms, as well as growing frustration over corruption and poor governance.

Escalation of Protests
The protests, which began peacefully, escalated dramatically on Tuesday, September 9, in the capital city of Kathmandu. Demonstrators set fire to several government buildings and tore down or defaced portraits of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli. Some protesters also targeted political figures and government offices, creating chaos in several districts. Witnesses reported clashes between protesters and police, resulting in injuries and multiple arrests.

Military Deployed
In an unusual move, the Nepal Army has been deployed to assist in restoring order. Soldiers are now patrolling streets, conducting identity checks, and monitoring vehicles to enforce the curfew. The government has stated that the curfew will remain in effect from 5 PM Wednesday until 6 AM Thursday, with the possibility of extension depending on the situation. Emergency services, including ambulances and fire departments, are exempt from the restrictions.

Impact on Travel and Borders
The unrest has also affected international travel. The Government of India has issued a travel advisory, urging its citizens to avoid non-essential trips to Nepal and advising those already in the country to remain indoors. Flights between India and Nepal have been temporarily suspended, and security along the India-Nepal border has been tightened to prevent potential spillover of unrest.

Underlying Causes
Analysts say the protests are driven by a combination of factors, including widespread corruption, lack of transparency, and restrictions on social media platforms, which many young Nepalese use as a tool for communication and activism. Gen Z, in particular, has played a significant role in organizing rallies and spreading information online, despite the government ban.

Current Situation
As of Wednesday morning, the situation in Kathmandu and other affected cities remains tense. Authorities have warned that any acts of violence or attempts to circumvent the curfew will be met with strict action. Residents are being urged to stay indoors and comply with security directives.

The coming days will be critical for Nepal as the government seeks to restore stability while addressing the grievances of a generation increasingly vocal about corruption, governance, and freedom of expression.
