Sikkim Writer Amar Baniya Lohoro Wins Sahitya Akademi Anuwad Puruskar 2025

Gangtok, 25 October: Sikkim-based writer and translator Shri Amar Baniya Lohoro has been awarded the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Anuwad Puruskar 2025 in the Nepali language category. The award ceremony was held in Kolkata, West Bengal, honoring Lohoro’s exceptional contribution to literary translation.

Lohoro received the award for his Nepali translation Matribhumi, originally written in Hindi as Watan by Dr. Nirmal Waliya. His work has been widely praised for maintaining linguistic precision and cultural authenticity, successfully conveying the essence of the original text to Nepali readers.

Hailing from 6th Mile, Tadong, Gangtok, Amar Baniya Lohoro is a prominent figure in Sikkim’s Nepali literary community. His recognition highlights the significance of translators in bridging languages and promoting cross-cultural understanding.

The Sahitya Akademi Anuwad Puruskar, instituted in 1989, is awarded annually by Sahitya Akademi, India’s National Academy of Letters. It recognizes outstanding translations of literary works across 24 Indian languages, including English, Rajasthani, and the 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

Recipients of the award receive a plaque and a cash prize of ₹50,000. The honour celebrates translators who play a vital role in preserving and sharing India’s rich literary traditions.
