Union Minister Anurag Thakur addressed the concerns of the Gorkha community in north Bengal, affirming BJP’s commitment to finding a permanent political solution, a long standing demand. He stated that discussions have been underway, emphasising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s potential to resolve the issue. Thakur’s remarks followed the release of BJP’s manifesto, which notably lacked mention of the hill communities’ demands.
This omission has caused dissatisfaction among hill residents, who have traditionally supported the party. Notably, BJP has won the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat thrice since 2009 with Gorkha support, previously addressing their concerns in manifestos.
Despite the manifesto oversight, BJP has been highlighting infrastructural developments in north Bengal, including new highways, airport improvements, and railway enhancements. Minister Thakur emphasized significant projects in the Darjeeling constituency, such as the Rs 1,000 crore Balason Bridge and Sevoke Military station four-laning.
Additionally, he lauded MP Raju Bista’s efforts in boosting connectivity and development in the region.
Thakur concluded the day by campaigning for Bista, BJP’s candidate for the Darjeeling seat, highlighting the party’s ongoing efforts to address local concerns while promoting their developmental agenda.
