The Delhi High Court is set to hear a plea on Friday seeking the disqualification of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from elections for six years. The petitioner, lawyer Anand S Jondhale, accuses PM Modi of violating the Model Code of Conduct during his campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.
Jondhale alleges that PM Modi sought votes in the name of Hindu and Sikh deities and their places of worship, while also making comments against opposing political parties. The petitioner contends that PM Modi’s speeches have the potential to incite hatred among voters based on caste and religion.
PM Modi’s remarks during a rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit on April 9, where he referenced Hindu and Sikh deities, are specifically cited. Jondhale had previously filed a complaint with the Election Commission, but no action was taken, prompting him to approach the Delhi High Court.
The plea calls for immediate disqualification of PM Modi from contesting elections, citing violations of the poll code’s provisions and invoking the Representation of People’s Act.
