In the fiscal year 2023-2024, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) witnessed a growth in revenue and passenger numbers compared to the previous financial year, continuing its allure as a UNESCO-recognized world heritage site. Total revenue reached Rs 22.17 crore, marking a significant increase from the Rs 19.24 crore earned in 2022-2023. Passenger count rose from 1.56 lakh to 1.81 lakh during the same period.
The upward trend underscores the enduring popularity of the toy trains among tourists. DHR Director A.K. Mishra expressed optimism about setting new records in the ongoing fiscal year (2024-2025). Initial responses indicate promising footfall, with tourists flocking to the hills to relish the pleasant weather and embark on toy train journeys.
The appeal lies in the scenic journey that meanders through sharp bends, offering panoramic vistas of the mountains and verdant tea estates. The most sought-after routes are the Joy Rides between Darjeeling and Ghoom stations, spanning 12 km. Currently, DHR operates eight Joy Rides and two regular services between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling.
However, expansion plans have been hindered by locomotive shortages. Efforts are underway to procure three new diesel locomotives from the Northeast Railway’s workshop in New Bongaigaon, Assam. These locomotives are expected to be commissioned by the year’s end, potentially facilitating the introduction of additional services to cater to the growing tourist influx.
