Sikkim’s “Tara” makes history: First film for the region selected for international Cannes festival

Date:

CAn achievement for Sikkim’s film industry, “Tara” the lost star, a project envisioned by Shyama Shree Sherpa and produced by her company SADA Productions in collaboration with Passang Mintok Films, has made history by becoming the first-ever film from the region to be selected for the prestigious Festival De Cannes. The journey of “Tara” began in early 2023 when Mrs. Sabitri Chettri pledged unwavering support to bring the story to the silver screen. The project initially faced challenges in finding the right director to execute the vision. However, Shyama Shree Sherpa’s insistence on excellence led her to Samten Bhutia, a seasoned Writer/Director from Gangtok (Sikkim).

With Bhutia on board as director and screenwriter, the project gained momentum. By mid-2023, a dedicated cast and crew from Sikkim, Darjeeling, and Nepal were assembled, and filming commenced in the picturesque Gnathang & Memenchhu area, spanning approximately a month. The production phase concluded in July 2023, followed by an extensive post-production process involving handpicked professionals and studios in Sikkim and Nepal.

After nine months of post-production work, “Tara” was finally completed in April 2024. Its selection for the Festival De Cannes in May 2024 marked a significant milestone for the film and the region’s cinematic landscape. “Tara” is not just a film; it’s a narrative of hope, faith, and perseverance, epitomizing the collaborative efforts of a team united by a shared dream to create a timeless masterpiece.
