Rare Event: Biggest Solar Storm in 20 years mesmerising display of Northern Lights

Date:

A powerful solar storm has ignited the Earth’s magnetosphere, illuminating the skies with the mesmerising Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. Predicted by NOAA as the most potent since 2003, this celestial spectacle has captivated skywatchers across the northern hemisphere and near the Himalayas in Ladakh.

NOAA’s rare alert on Thursday warned of potential disruption in communication, GPS, and satellite systems due to heightened solar activity. The auroras, triggered by solar flares and coronal mass ejections, have been visible as far south as Alabama and Northern California.

In an unprecedented move, NOAA issued a G4 geomagnetic-storm warning, the first in 20 years. Despite its potential for disruptions, experts believe the current solar eruptions are unlikely to cause significant trouble.

According to NOAA, the optimal time to witness the aurora borealis is typically between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time. The upcoming aurora owes its magnificence largely to a colossal sunspot known as AR3664, which has been unleashing powerful coronal mass ejections.

These eruptions propel high-energy solar particles towards Earth, interacting with the planet’s magnetic field to create the dazzling displays of the northern and southern lights. While typically confined to the Northern Hemisphere, a surge in high-energy particles can extend its reach over a larger portion of the planet.

As spectators marvel at the breathtaking spectacle of the Aurora Borealis, scientists continue to monitor solar activity, emphasising the need for vigilance and preparedness in the face of such celestial events.
