Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi Dies in Helicopter Crash, All Passengers Found Dead

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian died in a helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan province on Sunday, Iranian state media reported. The helicopter disappeared over a foggy, mountainous region, and all passengers were found dead upon discovery of the wreckage.

Raisi, 63, led Iran since 2021, amid heightened tensions with Israel and regional unrest. His policies included uranium enrichment and support for militia groups. The crash occurred amidst domestic economic challenges and women’s rights protests.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, highlighting Raisi’s role in India-Iran relations. Modi tweeted, “Deeply saddened by the tragic demise of President Ebrahim Raisi. His contributions to strengthening India-Iran bilateral ties will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Iran. India stands with Iran in this time of sorrow.”

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei emphasised continuity in government, with Vice President Mohammad Mokhber set to assume the presidency temporarily. International concern grew, with countries like Russia and Qatar expressing condolences.

Raisi’s death marks a significant moment in Iran’s political landscape, raising questions about its future direction. As tributes pour in, the nation mourns the loss of a leader amidst uncertainty and regional tensions.
