Darjeeling, marking the anniversary of Hill leader Late Madan Tamang’s tragic demise on 21st May, saw heartfelt tributes at his statue in Upper Clubside. Despite 14 years passing, his family awaits closure, lamenting the elusive justice. Bharati Tamang, his widow, voiced despair over potential political interference hindering the arrests of perpetrators. The All India Gorkha League (AIGL) joined by diverse political factions united to honor Tamang’s memory.
A strong call for justice resonated from Ajoy Edwards, president of the Hamro Party. He pledged comprehensive legal support, vowing to pursue the case through every judicial avenue, including the High Court and Supreme Court. The brutal daylight assassination of Tamang in 2010 remains a stark reminder of the challenges faced by leaders in the region. Despite initial CID investigations, the case was later transferred to the CBI. Notably, Bimal Gurung, along with other Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leaders, faced accusations in connection to the crime, though legal proceedings have seen twists and turns.
The anniversary serves not only as a moment of remembrance but also a renewed call for justice, ensuring that Darjeeling does not witness such tragedies again.
