The Sikkim government has launched the Chief Minister’s Mentorship Programe (CMMP) to boost the pass rate for Class 10 board exams and ensure every student receives the support they need to succeed. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay introduced the initiative during the Teachers’ Day celebrations on September 5, 2024, at Manan Kendra, Gangtok, with the goal of achieving a 100% pass rate in the upcoming Class 10 exams.
“This initiative is a significant step toward our goal of achieving a 100% pass rate in the Class X board examination and ensuring every student receives the guidance needed to succeed,” said Chief Minister Tamang-Golay, encouraging students to take full advantage of the program.
Despite Sikkim’s strong performance in previous exams, with a 67% pass rate last year, the state aims for further improvement. With one teacher for every 15 students, the state boasts the highest student-to-teacher ratio in the nation, yet challenges remain in certain schools where pass rates are low.
State Education Minister Raju Basnet highlighted that 84 trained resource persons have been selected to support students and focus on subjects like math and science. “Our objective is to see our students passing in all subjects, even with limited time,” he said. Workshops for school principals have been held to improve leadership and teaching strategies.
The education department is focusing on identifying and addressing student weaknesses, with mock tests and additional winter coaching camps planned for schools that have performed poorly in past exams.
The CMMP aims to eliminate barriers for students, ensuring that passing the Class 10 exams does not hinder their future opportunities. “Class 10 is the minimum requirement for most jobs and higher education, so it is crucial that no student is denied their future due to failure,” said Basnet. As Sikkim works toward a goal of 100% success, the CMMP could set a new benchmark for educational support in the region.
