Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Nigeria’s second-highest national award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja on Sunday. Modi is only the second foreign dignitary to receive the honor, following Queen Elizabeth in 1969.
In his remarks, Modi expressed his gratitude, dedicating the award to the people of India. “I accept this honor with humility and respect and dedicate it to the 140 crore Indians and our enduring friendship with Nigeria,” he said.
During his visit, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of strengthening the India-Nigeria strategic partnership. He highlighted mutual cooperation in sectors like defence, energy, trade, and security. Modi noted the shared challenges of terrorism, piracy, and radicalisation and reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to tackling these issues together.
Modi’s visit marks the first trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria in 17 years. He held a productive meeting with President Tinubu, discussing ways to enhance bilateral relations. The two leaders explored new possibilities for collaboration in areas such as agriculture, fintech, small enterprises, and culture.
PM Modi also acknowledged Nigeria’s positive role in Africa, noting that close cooperation with the continent has been a priority for India. “Nigeria has a very big and positive role in Africa, and India and Nigeria will move forward together for the prosperity of both nations and the entire African continent,” he said.
As part of his three-nation tour, Modi will continue his visit to Brazil and Guyana, further strengthening India’s global ties. This prestigious award, his 17th international recognition, underscores his leadership in enhancing India’s standing on the world stage.
