In a major push to encourage sustainable and balanced tourism, the central government has approved ₹3,295 crore for 40 projects spanning 23 states. These projects aim to transform lesser-known destinations into iconic attractions, reducing the strain on popular tourist spots while celebrating India’s cultural and natural diversity.
The Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the Department of Expenditure, finalised the projects after evaluating 87 proposals worth over ₹8,000 crore submitted by the October 15, 2024, deadline. “The selected projects align with our goal to create impactful destinations that enhance the tourism experience and support local economies,” a senior official stated.
Notable destinations chosen for development include Rang Ghar in Sivasagar (Assam), Matsyagandha Lake in Saharsa (Bihar), a proposed Town Square in Porvorim (Goa), and Orchha (Madhya Pradesh). The initiative offers states long-term, interest-free loans for up to 50 years to implement these projects, which encompass infrastructure upgrades and global branding efforts.
The Ministry of Tourism emphasised the initiative’s focus on easing congestion at overburdened tourist hubs while fostering sustainable growth. “By highlighting lesser-known destinations, we aim to alleviate pressure on high-traffic sites and provide visitors with a richer, more diverse travel experience,” a ministry spokesperson explained.
In addition to boosting tourism, the projects are expected to generate employment opportunities and stimulate local economies. The ministry stressed that sustainability would remain central to these developments.
States have been given a two-year deadline to complete the projects, with the funds to be disbursed by March 2026. This timeline reflects the government’s commitment to strategic and sustainable tourism growth nationwide.
