Manipur Welcomes Evicted Assam Residents Back to Native Villages

Following the recent eviction, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced that individuals evicted from Assam’s Karbi Anglong can return to their native villages in Manipur, provided they or their ancestors were residents of the state before 1961.

This decision comes after Singh confirmed that he is in touch with Assam authorities regarding the eviction of around 500-600 people from Karbi Anglong. The Manipur government has received a list of the evicted individuals, along with their native villages, and is currently verifying the details.

Singh emphasised that the 1961 cut-off year for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit and identification of illegal immigrants in Manipur will be the determining factor for allowing the evicted individuals to return.

This move aims to provide relief to those affected by the eviction, while also ensuring that the state’s regulations regarding residency and immigration are upheld.
