The Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, has approved two major tourism projects in Sikkim under the Scheme of Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI), with a combined budget of Rs 165 crore. These initiatives are part of a larger Rs 3,295 crore program across 23 states aimed at boosting tourism and promoting sustainable economic development through enhanced infrastructure.
The first project in South Sikkim involves the creation of a state-of-the-art Skywalk at Bhaleydunga, Yangang, Namchi. With an allocation of Rs 97.37 crore, the 240-meter-long glass-bottom walkway will be built at an altitude of 3,200 meters, providing panoramic views of the Bhaleydunga Peak and Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary. Accessibility will be ensured through a 3.5-kilometre ropeway and a 100-150-meter funicular, designed to minimise environmental impact.
“This project is set to position Sikkim as a premier ecotourism destination while generating 61 local employment opportunities,” stated a senior official from the tourism department. The plan also includes amenities such as medical rooms, an acclimatisation hall, and recreational spaces to enhance visitor experience.
The second project targets infrastructure improvements at Nathu La Pass, a prominent tourist and geopolitical site along the India-China border. With a budget of Rs 68.19 crore, the initiative aims to alleviate congestion and enhance tourist facilities. Plans include the creation of 1,500 parking spaces, tourist information centres, a cafeteria, and recreational areas.
“This development will not only address the needs of the increasing number of visitors but also provide approximately 30 jobs for the local community,” an official noted. Situated at 14,140 feet, Nathu La Pass remains a key attraction, drawing tourists with its scenic beauty and strategic significance.
Both projects reflect the government‘s commitment to strengthening Sikkim’s tourism sector while supporting local livelihoods.
