In a major breakthrough, the Union Cabinet has given the thumbs up to the “One Nation, One Election” bill, which aims to synchronise elections across the country. The bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament next week.
This initiative proposes holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, urban bodies, and panchayats within a 100-day timeframe. A high-level committee, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, submitted its report in March, highlighting the benefits of concurrent elections.
According to the committee’s findings, prolonged elections lead to uncertainty and affect the government’s ability to make decisions. In contrast, simultaneous elections would result in more consistent policies, reduced voter fatigue, and increased participation in the electoral process.
The bill’s approval marks a crucial step towards strengthening India’s democracy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his support for the initiative, acknowledging the efforts of the high-level committee.
Former President Ram Nath Kovind emphasised the need for building consensus to implement the “One Nation, One Election” initiative. He believes that this move will have a profound impact on the country, potentially boosting India’s GDP by 1 to 1.5 percent.
The “One Nation, One Election” bill is expected to spark a lively debate in Parliament, with various stakeholders weighing in on its merits and challenges.
