Landslides Force Closure of Key NH10 Stretch Between Siliguri and Sikkim Until Wednesday

Date:

Siliguri, August 4, 2025 — A critical 30-kilometre stretch of National Highway 10 (NH10), the main route connecting Siliguri with Sikkim and Kalimpong, has been closed to all traffic from 8 p.m. on Sunday until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, following multiple landslides and road cave-ins triggered by heavy monsoon rainfall.

The National Highway & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) announced the temporary closure of the Coronation Bridge (Sevoke)–Chitrey section, citing safety risks due to weakened road structures and unstable terrain.

A significant cave-in has been reported at Swetijhora, located between Sevoke and Teesta Bazar. Additionally, landslides have struck multiple locations including Kataray on the Pedong–Rishi road. Cracks have also appeared along vulnerable portions of the highway, raising further concerns about the structural integrity of the route.

As a safety measure, heavy vehicles have been barred from operating between Siliguri and Sikkim. Light vehicles are currently being rerouted through alternative roads, including National Highway 717A. However, transport operators have cautioned that the diversions will likely increase travel time, fuel expenses, and may lead to further logistical challenges if adverse weather conditions continue.

In a related development, the Teesta River has overflowed due to continuous rainfall, causing flooding in Totgaon, located in the Malbazar block of Jalpaiguri district. Over 40 families have been displaced and evacuated from the affected area.

Authorities are monitoring the situation and have urged travellers to avoid non-essential movement along these routes until further notice. Repair and restoration efforts are expected to begin once weather conditions stabilize.
