India’s U-17 Women’s Football Team Qualifies For AFC Asian Cup 2026

Date:

The India U-17 Women’s National Football Team has qualified for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026, marking a significant milestone in the history of Indian football. The qualification came after a 2–1 win over Uzbekistan in their final Group G qualifier, held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

With two wins in two matches, India secured six points to finish at the top of Group G, thereby earning a place in the continental tournament scheduled to be held in China in 2026.

This achievement is historic as it marks India’s first-ever qualification for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup through the official qualification process. India last participated in the tournament in 2005, during a period when teams were selected directly, without qualifiers.

India’s qualification is a key moment in the development of women’s football at the grassroots and youth levels. It reflects improvements in coaching, scouting, and infrastructure, as well as the growing participation of young girls in the sport across the country.

The success of the U-17 team also demonstrates the increasing regional diversity and representation within the national squad, a positive sign for the sport’s inclusive growth nationwide.

Among the players representing India is Abhista Basnet, a 16-year-old footballer from Pakyong, Sikkim. Her inclusion highlights the emerging sports talent from the northeastern states, and the increasing visibility of Sikkim in India’s national sports framework.

Her achievement stands as an example of how young athletes from smaller regions are making their mark on the national and international stage.

The AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup is one of Asia’s premier youth football competitions, offering a platform for the continent’s most promising young female footballers. It serves as an important step in the pathway to senior-level international football and is a gateway to global events such as the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Preparations for the 2026 tournament are expected to begin soon, with a focus on building a strong, competitive squad. This qualification is seen as a positive indicator of the future of women’s football in India, and a testament to the growing investment in youth development.

The achievement is not only a source of pride for Indian football but also a motivational milestone for aspiring young players across the country.
