The Ministry of Railways has approved ₹8.48 crore for the Final Location Survey (FLS) of the proposed Melli–Dentam railway line, planned as an extension of the Sevoke–Rangpo railway project, which is nearing completion. The project aims to enhance railway connectivity across South and West Sikkim, improving accessibility to remote areas and promoting regional economic growth.
The proposed 75-kilometre route will pass through Melli, Jorethang, Legship, and Dentam, linking these regions with the national railway network. Melli will serve as the junction connecting the Sevoke–Rangpo line with the new extension, while Dentam, situated near the Indo–Nepal border at Chiwabhanjyang, will form the western terminus of the route.
The Melli–Dentam line is expected to act as a major driver of economic development, trade, and tourism in West Sikkim. By improving accessibility, it will help integrate remote communities into mainstream economic activities, attract investment, and create employment opportunities.
The approval reflects coordinated efforts between the central and state governments to strengthen transport infrastructure in Sikkim. Once completed, the railway line is expected to significantly improve regional connectivity, bolster strategic and developmental priorities, and reshape the state’s transportation network.
