In the Asian Boxing Championship 2022 in Amman, Jordan, Indian female boxers are breaking records. The Indian women have been drenched with gold and silver at this illustrious competition.
Lovlina Borgohain of Golaghat, Assam, won the gold medal in the 75-kg division, earning her first gold medal in an Asian championship. She had previously won bronze in 2017 and 2019. In the championship match, she defeated Ruzmetova Sokhiba of Uzbekistan by a score of 5-0. The boxers manoeuvred around the ring to avoid blows, but Lovlina connected with her forceful fist, and the referee had no choice but to give her the victory. Due to her prior weight category not being scheduled for the Paris Olympics, Lovlina moved up from the 69kg to the 75kg weight category.
Her previous medals include bronzes from the Asian, World, and Olympic competitions. This Assamese fighter has a confidence-boosting first gold in her trophy collection as she prepares for the Olympics.
In the 63 kg division, Parveen Hooda of Rurkee village in Haryana also won the gold medal. Japan’s fourth-seeded Kito Mai was defeated by World Championship bronze winner Parveen by a score of 5-0 in a unanimous decision. Even though the Japanese fighter was unprepared for her lightning-fast blows, Hooda was able to dazzle the spectators with her uppercuts, particularly in the third round.
Alfiya Pathan of Nagpur overcame Islam Husaili of Jordan due to opponent disqualification to win gold in the 81+ kg division, while Saweety Boora of Haryana defeated Gulsaya Yerzhan of Kazakhstan 5:0 by yet another unanimous decision.
Another boxer from India, Minakshi, finished the 52 kg flyweight division of the Asian Championships with a silver medal. By a 1-4 split decision, she was defeated by Japanese player Kinoshita Rinka, the second seed.
At the Asian Championships in 2017, only one Indian woman, Pinki Rani, took home the gold medal. After seven gold medals in 2005 and five in 2003, Indian women’s performance in the current competition is third best overall.
