Siliguri, August 7, 2025 — A youth in the Haider Para area of Siliguri was reportedly attacked with a sharp object after he refused to exchange what he believed to be a counterfeit ₹5,000 note. Police have taken one individual into custody in connection with the incident, which has sparked concern and outrage among local residents.
According to the victim’s family, the accused had approached the youth, requesting change for a ₹5,000 note. The youth declined, suspecting the currency to be fake. Following this, the accused allegedly called the victim to his residence under false pretenses, where the assault took place.
The youth sustained multiple injuries during the attack, including a serious cut to the nose. He is currently receiving medical treatment, and his condition is reported to be stable
Local residents have raised alarms about the accused’s behavior, with some alleging a pattern of violent conduct and substance abuse. In a recent unrelated incident, the same individual was reportedly involved in an altercation where chili powder was thrown at a rickshaw puller, leading to injury.
The community has expressed frustration over the lack of preventive action and is urging authorities to address what they see as a growing threat from drug-related violence in the area.
Police officials have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the attack. “We are treating this matter seriously and ensuring all leads are pursued. One person has been detained and further inquiries are in progress,” a police spokesperson stated.
As the case unfolds, calls are growing for stricter enforcement against repeat offenders and increased community policing to ensure safety in Siliguri’s neighborhoods.
