Following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, the Bidhannagar Police has taken action by filing an FIR against several notable individuals, including former GTA chairperson Binay Tamang, former state education minister Partha Chatterjee, and TMCP state president Trinankur Bhattacharya, among others. This move comes in response to allegations of irregularities in teachers’ recruitment within schools under the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).
The FIR, lodged based on a complaint from the state School Education Department, marks a significant step in addressing longstanding concerns over purported malpractice in the hiring process.
The complaint, previously submitted to the Bidhannagar Police, had allegedly been overlooked, prompting the High Court’s intervention. Justice Biswajit Basu had directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a preliminary inquiry, underscoring the urgency of the matter and requesting an affidavit from both the police and the GTA within a specified timeframe.
The allegations date back to 2022, implicating former GTA officials in the appointment of around 500 teachers. It is claimed that these appointments favoured individuals linked to political circles. Former GTA chairperson Binay Tamang, now associated with the Congress, and ex-education minister Partha Chatterjee, currently detained in connection with a separate hiring scandal, are among those named in the FIR.
TMCP leader Trinankur Bhattacharya has expressed readiness to cooperate with the investigation, emphasising the importance of uncovering the truth. The High Court has mandated a swift inquiry, demanding a preliminary report from the CBI within two weeks.
