West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has vowed to challenge a Calcutta High Court ruling that invalidated all appointments made through a 2016 teacher recruitment test, calling the court’s decision “illegal.” Speaking at an election rally in North Bengal, Banerjee alleged that BJP leaders were influencing the judiciary, promising to stand by those who lost their jobs and pursue the matter in higher courts.
The Calcutta High Court’s decision mandates the cancellation of all appointments made through the State Level Selection Test-2016 (SLST) in West Bengal government-sponsored and aided schools, as well as requiring individuals hired through the process to return their salaries within six weeks. The court found irregularities in the recruitment process and instructed the School Service Commission (SSC) to conduct fresh hiring.
The teacher recruitment scandal surfaced after the arrest of former Bengal education minister and Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee in 2022. He was detained following the discovery of large amounts of cash and jewelry at the home of his aide, Arpita Mukherjee. Chatterjee and Mukherjee face charges of involvement in the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment scam.
The BJP has been quick to criticize Banerjee, calling for her resignation and accusing her administration of systemic corruption. Banerjee, in turn, accused the BJP of orchestrating the court ruling. Opposition parties, including the Left, also demanded that Banerjee take responsibility for the scandal and called for investigations into her party’s financial dealings.
