In a disturbing incident, the premises of the Ramakrishna Mission in Siliguri were subjected to a violent attack by a group of around a dozen individuals late Sunday night. Armed with firearms and sharp weapons, the perpetrators forcibly entered the Bhaktinagar area campus, threatening both security personnel and resident monks. Their menacing demands included vacating the property and the demolition of structures.
The assailants, identified as potential members of the local land mafia, proceeded to disable CCTV surveillance and confiscated mobile phones from all within the ‘ashram.’ Their brazen actions culminated in a written complaint lodged by the ashram authorities with the Bhaktinagar police station, detailing the harrowing ordeal.
Political figures, including MLA Shankar Ghosh and Mayor Gautam Deb, vehemently denounced the attack, vowing swift and decisive action against the culprits. It has been revealed that the targeted property, known as the “Sewak House,” was generously donated to the Ramakrishna Mission, serving as a residence for its members.
Reports indicate a pattern of aggression towards the mission’s properties, with allegations of attempts by land grabbers to encroach upon their holdings. Despite the gravity of the situation, law enforcement authorities have yet to apprehend any suspects, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation.
The incident has drawn national attention, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemning the attack during a public address in Bengal. While speculation regarding political motivations remains unsubstantiated, the gravity of the assault underscores the urgent need for safeguarding religious and charitable institutions against such threats.
Efforts to ascertain the motives behind the attack are ongoing, with the Ramakrishna Mission reaffirming its commitment to serving the community despite these challenges.
