Sikkim has named Kuzu, a snow leopard, as the official mascot for its 50th statehood anniversary, which will be celebrated on May 16, 2025. The announcement, made through a notification by the Home Department on December 9, 2024, marks the beginning of preparations for the milestone event. The celebrations will be themed “Sunaulo Samriddha Ani Samarth Sikkim” (Golden, Prosperous, and Empowered Sikkim), reflecting the state’s aspirations for sustainable growth and self-reliance.
The notification emphasised the importance of creating widespread awareness for the occasion, stating, “The state government is pleased to designate the Snow Leopard, named ‘Kuzu,’ as the official mascot to promote recognition and publicity of this significant event.”
Renowned for its natural beauty and biodiversity, Sikkim chose the Snow Leopard to highlight its commitment to environmental conservation. An endangered species native to the Himalayan region, the Snow Leopard symbolises the state’s dedication to protecting its ecological heritage and unique wildlife.
Chief Secretary V.B. Pathak called the golden jubilee a landmark event, stating, “This 50th statehood anniversary is a defining moment for Sikkim. ‘Kuzu’ embodies our pride and ambition, bridging our historical legacy with our aspirations for the future.”
The celebrations will include a series of cultural programs, conservation campaigns, and community events designed to honour Sikkim’s achievements since becoming part of the Indian Union in 1975. The state government will integrate elements such as an official logo, theme song, and Kuzu as the mascot to foster unity and instill pride among its people.
As Sikkim prepares for this historic milestone, the introduction of Kuzu not only reflects the state’s journey but also serves as a call to action for protecting its natural and cultural treasures.
