Sikkim Environmentalist Honoured Globally With Orchid Named As ‘Cymbidium Kumar Yonzon’

Date:

In a prestigious global recognition, a new hybrid orchid has been named after noted Sikkim environmentalist Kumar Yonzon. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the International Cultivar Registration Authority for Orchid Hybrids based in the UK, has officially registered the orchid as Cymbidium Kumar Yonzon.

The hybrid, a cross between Cymbidium Magic Kiwi and Cymbidium Joan’s Charisma, was unveiled during the Indian Orchid Festival 2025 at the ICAR-National Research Centre for Orchids (NRCO) in Pakyong, Sikkim.

Yonzon, president of the Green Zone Society located in Tashithang Kartok, Chalamthang Pacheykhani, Pakyong district, has been recognised for his long-standing contributions to environmental conservation and biodiversity management in the region.

According to a statement by the Information and Public Relations Department, the successful registration process links the orchid to international horticultural records, further highlighting Yonzon’s impact on global biodiversity awareness.

Yonzon has led numerous conservation and awareness initiatives in Sikkim, focusing on preserving fragile ecosystems and promoting sustainable practices. The naming of Cymbidium Kumar Yonzon is not only a personal honour but also shines a spotlight on Sikkim’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its rich floral heritage.
