Sikkim Cracks Down on 900+ Illegal Online Gambling Sites Seizes ₹32 Crore

Date:

Sikkim, 23 August 2025 – In a bold move to combat the growing menace of illegal online gambling, the Sikkim Police, in collaboration with the Directorate of State Lotteries, has launched a massive crackdown on fraudulent gambling websites targeting residents of the state. The authorities uncovered more than 900 such websites, with some engaging in large-scale operations that have resulted in devastating financial losses for individuals and families.

As part of the operation, law enforcement discovered a frozen bank account linked to gambling proceeds, which contained a staggering ₹32 crore. This revelation has prompted increased concern about the extent of the illegal gambling network operating within and outside the state.

DIG Tenzing Loden Lepcha’s Warning on Gambling Addiction

DIG Tenzing Loden Lepcha, who is leading the investigation, drew a stark comparison between online gambling addiction and drug abuse, emphasizing the severe psychological and social consequences for those affected. “Online gambling addiction is as destructive as drug addiction. It ruins lives, disrupts families, and destroys financial stability. The reach of these illegal platforms has a devastating impact on our community,” said Lepcha.

In his address, Lepcha highlighted the fact that these gambling sites were actively targeting vulnerable populations, particularly youth, through sophisticated online marketing tactics. Many residents, unknowingly drawn into the trap, have suffered financial ruin and personal hardship.

The Battle Against a Growing Network of Websites

The operation resulted in the shutdown of nearly 900+ illegal gambling websites, including well-known platforms like Khelo Bet, which had a significant user base. However, the success of the crackdown was short-lived as almost 900 new fraudulent websites emerged shortly after the closures. This rapid replacement of websites has presented new challenges for authorities, forcing them to shift focus towards freezing bank accounts tied to the gambling activities and tracing the money trails leading to the perpetrators.

The illegal gambling websites often employ sophisticated methods to evade enforcement, including registering their domains abroad and using cloud hosting services based in foreign countries. These tactics make it difficult for local authorities to track and shut down the websites effectively.

A Wider Concern: Support from Ministry of Home Affairs

The scale of the operation has garnered significant attention at the national level, with the Ministry of Home Affairs offering its support to the Sikkim Police in their ongoing efforts. The Ministry has recognized the growing threat of online gambling and has vowed to assist states in cracking down on these illicit activities.

The crackdown in Sikkim has set a precedent for other states across India, highlighting the need for a coordinated national approach to tackle illegal gambling. Authorities are now exploring additional strategies to combat the use of foreign-based domains and other loopholes exploited by these illegal platforms.

Next Steps: A Coordinated Approach to Protect Residents

Sikkim’s police and state lottery authorities are working hand-in-hand to protect residents from the dangers of online gambling, ensuring that those involved in running fraudulent sites are held accountable. The authorities are also focusing on spreading awareness about the risks of online gambling addiction and urging residents to report suspicious activities.

As the investigation continues, it is expected that more arrests will be made, and further websites will be shut down. The police and other stakeholders are also coordinating with international cybercrime units to track down the operators behind the illegal gambling sites.

With the support of both local and national agencies, the authorities in Sikkim aim to dismantle the illegal gambling network and restore safety and security to the state’s online landscape.
