Teesta Barrage Bridge Reopens Early, Restores Key Siliguri–Dooars Link

Date:

Gajoldoba, September 4, 2025 — In a much-anticipated development for the people of North Bengal, the Teesta Barrage Bridge at Gajoldoba has reopened to vehicular traffic nearly three weeks ahead of its scheduled completion date, bringing relief to commuters and boosting regional connectivity just ahead of the festive season.

Repair work on the bridge began on April 27, 2025, following significant structural damage caused during the 2023 Sikkim lake outburst disaster. The situation was further worsened due to the heavy movement of dumper trucks, which placed additional stress on the already compromised structure. Originally, the repair deadline was set for September 21, but thanks to the efficiency and dedication of the engineers from the Teesta Barrage Division, the bridge is now operational much earlier than expected.

The reopening was marked by a formal ceremony, attended by key public figures including Bulu Chik Baraik, Minister of State for Backward Class Welfare & Tribal Department, and Khageswar Rai, MLA. District Magistrate Shama Parveen confirmed that the major repair work is complete, with only minor finishing touches remaining. Minister Baraik praised the joint efforts of the administration and engineering teams, emphasizing the bridge’s strategic importance as the only direct route connecting Siliguri to the Dooars via Gajoldoba.

The bridge has now been deemed safe for all vehicles, including dumpers with a load capacity of up to 25 tons. This reopening is especially significant for local residents, tourists, and business owners who rely on this critical route for daily transport and economic activity.

The early reopening has been warmly welcomed by the local business and tourism communities. Dibyendu Deb, President of the Dooars Tourism Development Welfare Association, expressed optimism about the timing. “This bridge is essential for tourists traveling from Siliguri to the Dooars. Opening it before the festive season will definitely help revive tourism and stimulate the local economy,” he said.

With the tourist season approaching and Durga Puja around the corner, the resumption of traffic across the Teesta Barrage Bridge is expected to ease travel, reduce detours, and bring a positive impact on livelihoods across the region.
