Bengal-Nepal Border On Alert As Violence Escalates Across Border

Date:

September 10, 2025 – Widespread protests in Nepal have left 19 people dead and over 250 injured, prompting India to enhance security along the Bengal-Nepal border. The unrest erupted after the Nepalese government banned 26 social media platforms, triggering student-led demonstrations against corruption, inequality, and poor governance.

Prime Minister Resigns Amid Unrest
In the wake of escalating violence, Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned. Protesters set fire to his residence, and mobs attacked law enforcement personnel, resulting in the deaths of three policemen. Government buildings and other public infrastructure were also damaged in several cities.

Border Security Heightened in India
On the Indian side, authorities have stepped up vigilance along the sensitive Siliguri Corridor. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Darjeeling police intensified checks at the Panitanki-Kakarvitta crossing, a key trade route between India and Nepal. Measures include:

Deployment of sniffer dogs

Thorough inspections of vehicles and goods

24-hour patrolling and monitoring

North Bengal police chief Rajesh Kumar Yadav confirmed that no incidents have been reported in India so far. Additional forces and intelligence teams have been deployed as a precautionary measure.

Government Advisory and Public Response
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged residents living near the border to remain calm and maintain peace. She also confirmed there were no reports of stranded tourists in the region.

Current Situation
Nepal continues to enforce curfews across multiple cities while India maintains a close watch to prevent any spillover of unrest. The situation remains tense as both governments monitor developments closely, with authorities warning that any attempt to cross the border illegally or violate curfew regulations will face strict action.
