Traffic Between Siliguri and Mirik Restricted for Safety Following Frequent Accidents

Date:

Siliguri: Authorities have temporarily restricted traffic movement between Siliguri and Mirik following frequent accidents in the region. Only emergency vehicles, including ambulances and medical transport, are currently allowed to operate through the Tingling, Nole, and Potong routes until further notice.

Taxi services are permitted to operate only up to Dudhey. Passengers traveling from Mirik to Siliguri can take taxis from Mirik to Dudhey at a fare of ₹150 and continue from Dudhey to Siliguri for another ₹150, making the total journey cost ₹300.

Private vehicles have been diverted via Ghoom and Kurseong to reach Siliguri as these routes are currently considered safer. Authorities emphasized that the restrictions aim to prevent further accidents and protect the lives of commuters and drivers.

Officials noted that the decision followed several road mishaps resulting in fatalities. In response, the State Government has announced the construction of an alternate bridge within 15 days to improve connectivity and safety. The GTA Chief has also reassured the public that the project will be completed within the announced timeframe.
