A significant portion of National Highway 10 (NH10) has collapsed between the 29th Mile and Gelkhola, severely affecting traffic and halting the movement of heavy vehicles. The incident has raised concerns as nearly 75 percent of the road has caved in, making it highly unsafe for large vehicles.
The affected stretch, located between the Coronation Bridge and Teesta Bridge, is a crucial arterial route linking Siliguri with Kalimpong and Gangtok. In response to the collapse, district authorities have restricted heavy vehicle movement, while small vehicles are being allowed on a single-lane basis under strict caution.
Authorities have advised commuters to avoid the area entirely due to the increased risk of further collapse. Restoration efforts are underway, but officials have warned that repairs may take time given the extent of the damage.
To ensure safer travel, alternate routes such as Panbu Road and Lava-Gorubathan Road have been recommended for commuters heading between Kalimpong, Siliguri, and Gangtok.
Travelers are urged to stay informed through official updates, plan their journeys accordingly, and exercise caution until normal traffic resumes on NH10.
