Trinamool Congress MPs have raised concerns over the alleged involvement of the Modi-led government following US charges against billionaire Gautam Adani and his associates for bribery. Adani is accused of paying $250 million in bribes to Indian officials from 2020 to 2024 to secure favorable terms for solar energy contracts.
TMC MP Saket Gokhale criticized the Indian government’s silence while markets reacted sharply to the allegations, with Adani Energy stocks plummeting and the group’s total market valuation eroding by ₹2.45 lakh crore. Gokhale shared updates on X, highlighting the indictment’s implications and demanding clarity on the government’s involvement.
TMC MP Mahua Moitra also criticized Adani and called for an independent judicial probe, stating the charges point to a larger systemic corruption involving public sector units. She accused SEBI Chief Madhabi Puri Buch of inaction and questioned SEBI‘s impartiality, citing alleged ties to the Adani Group.
The BJP responded by questioning the timing of the charges, coinciding with the Parliament session and political developments in the US. BJP IT head Amit Malviya pointed out that the bribe-related states mentioned in the indictment were opposition-ruled at the time.
US prosecutors allege that Adani concealed the bribery scheme from American banks and investors, who provided billions for the project. The alleged corruption, if proven, could have yielded profits exceeding $2 billion for the Adani Group.
The case follows scrutiny from US short-seller Hindenburg Research, which earlier accused SEBI of being compromised in its investigation of the Adani Group. Both SEBI and Adani have refuted these allegations.
With opposition leaders calling for accountability, the issue has reignited debate over corporate and political corruption in India. The Adani Group has yet to comment on the charges.
